Life on the dump
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, children work as garbage pickers and scavenge through 100 acres of rubbish on a toxic waste dump called Stung Mean Chey. They will begin working at the dump as soon as they can walk. It’s their only choice if they want to survive. if they do not collect money by selling the garbage they pick then they simply cannot eat.

Very few of the children can go to school and they are often forced into taking drugs by drug dealers, threatened by gangs and even raped on the dump. Some parents are even forced to sell their children into prostitution to provide for the rest of the family. A virgin child is sold for about £150.

The Centre for Children’s Happiness
The Centre for Children’s Happiness, in Phnom Penh, has been set up to enable the hope of a productive and healthy future for impoverished street children and those working as garbage pickers on Stung Mean Chey

The centre was set up by a Cambodian man, Mr. Mech Sokha, who himself was orphaned as a result of the brutal Khmer Rougue killings. He has made it his life’s work to help other orphaned and poor children. When Sokha and Ron met, a strong friendship was formed.

Back to get help
Before Ron left Cambodia he went to Stung Mean Chey with Sokha and took two children off the dump and paid for their care at the centre, but he felt this wasn’t enough. On his return to England he worked tirelessly to get the help of his friends and neighbours to start a charity, so that more children could be given a new life. The charity, Cambodia’s Dump Children was subsequently formed.

Our Progress
So much has happened since Cambodia’s Dump Children was started in 2004. Our small, voluntarily run charity based in a small Lancashire town has proven to help these children so much more than anybody could have imagined. We have raised over £60.000 to provide a second building in Cambodia that houses over 100 children. This building has been named CDCC after our UK original UK charity, Cambodia’s Dump Children Committee.

Sadly, Ron died in 2005 but we will always remember him for his compassion, perseverance and determination to help these children. We feel he has done his part and the rest is now up to us.Watch%20our%20film.htmlThe%20Centre%20for%20Childrens%20Happiness.htmlSponsor%20a%20child%20or%20make%20a%20donation%20.htmlshapeimage_14_link_0shapeimage_14_link_1shapeimage_14_link_2
How it all began
It all began in 2004 when Mr.Ron Spratt, the founder member of the charity, took a trip to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and saw the harrowing reality that many men, woman and children face in their sheer fight for survival. Thousands of families were literally living off the city’s waste dump, where 700 tons of rubbish is brought to everyday.
